Flu Brew

Now that we are getting back to our normal routines after COVID, we are once again being exposed to the seasonal cycles of cold and flu. This drink will bring relief when you are getting sick with congestion or aches, a sore throat, are feeling cold, or just need an immune boost.
Flu brew is soothing and warming. The combined ingredients are full of anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties to help your immune system fight off colds and flu.

INGREDIENTS:
2 cloves garlic peeled and bruised
4 cm grated ginger
1 mild chili, deseeded and chopped
1 cinnamon stick or 1 teaspoon of dried cinnamon
10 cardamom pods bruised so you can see the black seeds inside
10 black pepper corns
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 litre water
2 lemons peeled with a potato peeler and juiced
4 tablespoons raw honey

METHOD:
Place the garlic, ginger, chili, cinnamon, cardamom, pepper corns, cayenne pepper, lemon rind and water in saucepan, bring to the boil and simmer on a low heat with lid on for 5 minutes.

Strain the boiled liquid and return it to a clean saucepan. This is your brew.

In a large mug add the juice of 1/2 a lemon, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1/4 of the hot brew, (about 250 ml).
Stir and drink while hot.

Aim to have 4 cups of this hot brew with lemon juice and honey throughout the day.
If you are on the go combine the lemon juice and honey in a 1 litre thermos with the hot strained flu brew and sip it throughout the day.
